This mammoth (22 ft) propeller, one of 4 that made the SS US the fastest passenger ship ever (according to the plaque), is oddly located in a parking lot for the Intrepid Museum.
More incredible engineering. What metal is that prop made of? It has a golden/brassy kind of look. Surely must be of stronger stuff. That should be in a science museum somewhere. I would like to see more shots of this beast. Maybe from different viewpoints.
I'm not sure what the connection is between this propeller and the Intrepid is either. I read where the SS United States is currently docked in Philadelphia but may find a home in New York someday. Bill's right - the propeller should be in a science museum or from the impression made in your photo - an art museum. There is something distinctly sculptural about the piece.
