Oil Tanks

Oil Tanks

These surely have a name, but they are the openings through which heating oil is delivered to apartments in the city. In my building they are flush with the sidewalk, but here they are mounted upright against the wall of the building.

Bridge Apartments

IMG_1171

Bridge 1

Bridge 3

First one shot from the shady side, the second two from the sunny side. Still cold today, but at least clear, sunny skies. The blue here is intense, I actually tried to tone it down a bit...

(And yes, the third one is square!)

Three From The River

Life Feeds on Decay

Stepping Stones

River Boulders

Tripod, telephoto, small aperture. Still not as much depth of field as I would like in the last shot. Probably needed to get closer and use less tele, but see below about the freaking cold. I like the results from using a tripod, but man do you have to slow down and take fewer shots and be committed to what you are shooting because fiddling with all the knobs and adjustments on the tripod is such a hassle.

Discovered the zoom feature in live view mode for manual focusing is quite nice. Also need to remember that live view is practically 100% view - I'm used to allowing a little play around the edges when using the viewfinder, so the tip of the log in #1 is cut off. Too cold, though, today. Even with gloves my fingers were frozen after a brief time by the river - wind chill, mainly.

Roots

Ginko Base

Exposed Roots 1

Exposed roots 2

The exposed roots of the Ginko tree extend a good meter or more beyond the base of the tree and are well worn from much foot traffic, as seen in the last two shots. Light is a little flat here, but that's what I had to work with today.

Sori

Sori

Spore clusters on the underside of fern fronds.

The Art of Chocolate

Chocolate Art

A nice gift from a student, I don't want to eat them they're so pretty. Cropped the aspect ratio just a bit.

Berries

Berries

An out of focus twig bothers me on this one, but it was getting dark and it was kind of a throw away shot that I wound up liking....

Treescapes

Treescapes 1

Treescapes 4

Treescapes 3

Treescapes 2

I've been under the weather lately, and extra busy at work as well (why do those two things always seeem to go hand-in-hand?)

Anyway, a reasonably nice day today for walking around. Went into Inwood Hill Park where there are some really nice old trees. I believe they are the only remaining trees in Manhattan that are of preserved natural forest from the time before Europeans arrived (not any particular tree is that old, but the forest is not man-made and was never cleared.)

I have no idea how to capture the majesty of the individual trees, so I went with my usual detail shots.

Dreary Days

Triple Bars

Several days of fog and clouds and light rain here in the city. Posting a couple of walk-around shots from Friday and Saturday.

Cross Bars

Gull at the Marina

Only had time for one shot of the gull before it flew away.
