Hinge

Hinge

Very uncommon door hinge in this country, original from a building that went up in the 40s. Last time we had to replace one it cost about $175.00 - just the hinge, not installation. Anyway, I see I need to clean them, but I left it dirty for the effect.

  1. Nice shot of what we call a "Paumelle" mostly a hinge that is welded to a steel door and frame without the ability to remove the pin but you can lift the door out of its frame when open. I see it has layers and layers of paint on it. Of course they are also with blades that you can screw on the frame and are originally from french design I believe. Nice kind of art deco form here.

  2. For some reason I couldn't think of the term Art Deco last night, but that's what I was thinking of - there are a number of such details in the building I live in. I never knew the term paumelle, but I googled it and found some nice examples of hinges with this same design - thanks, s.c.!
